Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a 309 kDa polymer plasma glycoprotein. Through the formation of molecular bridge between collagen matrix and GPIb-IX-V under the endothelium, VWF can promote the adhesion of platelets to the damaged blood vessels, thus it plays an important role in maintaining hemostasis. VWF can also be used as a molecular chaperone of coagulation factor VIII to transfer it to the injured site, stabilize its heterodimer structure and protect it from premature plasma clearance. VWF is synthesized by endothelial cells and is reported to be expressed in many vascular tumors. IHC results are helpful for the classification of Fab M7, angiosarcoma and epithelioid hemangioendothelioma.
